Stricter “Hours of Service Rules” Reduce Trucker Fatigue

In 2013 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) amended the Surface Transportation Act of 1982 to implement tougher federal “Hours of Service” rules.

Goal: Reduce Trucker Fatigue

CAPS on trucker hours now in effect:

Work Limits:

  • Daily – 14 hours
  • Weekly – 70 hours

Drive Limits:

  • Daily – 11 hours

Required Breaks

  • 10 hour break after 11 hour day
  • 30 min break after 8 hours of driving
  • 34 hours break after 70 hour week;
